Davis had his first baseball game yesterday. It seemed like an absolute certainty that the game would be cancelled before we had to make the drive to the ball fields. No such luck. Once at the field, it seemed very likely that one, or both teams would not have enough players to take the field. That wish went unfulfilled. It became clear the game was going to be played.
Batting practice started promptly at 4:45. The temperature was in the low 50's with light rain. The forecast called for increasing showers, wind, and falling temperatures. With both teams having enough players, the next wish was for the game to start early.
We were in a slight rush leaving because we just knew the game would be cancelled at any minute. Asking Davis to put on his uniform seemed silly because of the cold, miserable weather we'd been having all day. When we got the word that Coach said the game was still on, we had to postpone taking photos and hit the road.
Davis was such a trooper. He took to the field with his teammates and somehow managed to stay alert and focused. The rain was gradually increasing, and the winds were gusting. After two innings, the game was mercifully cancelled. Nobody was concerned if there had been a forfeit by one team, or a tie, or a rescheduling of the game. The kids were so wet and so cold.
All of our phones and cameras were taking shelter in the car. There are zero photos from the game (a first). We didn't get photos of Davis in his uniform after the game, either. Wet clothes were shed in the car, with the heat going full-blast. Davis got dry & warm, and was soon laughing and talking about what a tough ball player he is.
