This is an awesome National Park!
It's only a few minutes from Flagstaff, Arizona.
So, he really enjoyed our 2 hour mini-excursion!
The landscape around the volcanic crater
alternates between lush evergreen & spooky-craggily
Sometimes, even the same tree will share both traits
Davis served as our trail guide.
He had a few safety pointers for us.
The park wasn't crowded, so it's possible to have a viewing area
or even an entire trail to yourself!
Our guide deemed this to be the largest lava rock
he had ever seen.
He suggested we use the bridge
to cross over the now-cooled lava river.
His keen eye spotted a lone little pine
on top of the lava out-cropping
super-smooth above, sharp & jagged below
twisted & gnarly & handsome!
It was difficult to go more than 20 feet without
wanting to take another photo!
This is as close as our guide allowed us to get
to the summit of the volcano.
